WHAT
IS A KOINONIA WEEKEND ALL ABOUT?
It offers a potential for growth, with emphasis on spiritual growth.
It offers an opportunity for discovering more of the meaning of
life through Christian community and unconditional love.
It is a way of renewal for the church, focusing responsibility
and mission beyond Koinonia.
It is a launching pad to encourage action within the church
and in the world.
It is an experience of continuing Christian community.
A
KOINONIA WEEKEND IS THREE DAYS LONG, BUT LASTS A LIFETIME!
The
weekend begins on a Friday night and ends on the following Sunday
afternoon. Those participating listen to talks on Priorities, Grace,
Piety, Study, Action, Laity, Community, and Fourth Day. These talks
are given, for the most part, by laypeople. After each talk, time
is given to allow participation in discussion of the talk within the
framework of a small group. The talks provide thought for the discussions
and guidelines for life beyond the weekend.
HOW
DID KOINONIA BEGIN?
Koinonia
is patterned after the Roman Catholic Cursillo that began in Spain
in the 1940s. Koinonia came to Texas in October 1994, thanks to
the hard work and enthusiasm of a great many dedicated Koinonians
in Arkansas, and a few Texans who had experienced Koinonia in Arkansas
and Colorado. The Koinonia outreach began in the Presbyterian church
in Findlay, Ohio in May, 1972, so that men and women, married and
single, and those of different denominations, could participate
on the same weekend. The Koinonia weekend is somewhat modified from
the Cursillo weekend, but the same basic theme exists: A short
course in Christianity.
Be Curious! Be open to what is happening on the weekend!
Be honest with yourself as to where you are in your pilgrimage.
Know that a specific response is not expected of you.
Allow others to respond in their way, while you respond in
yours.
A Koinonia weekend is many things, but most of all, it is an experience
to be lived. It is filled with joy, much informal conversation,
much singing, and a lot of fun and laughter. Within three days,
believers become a true Christian community, experience the Divine
mystery of Christs endless love. The experience of a Koinonia
weekend is described differently by each participant.
WHO
WILL BE AT A KOINONIA WEEKEND?
People
like you, laity and clergy, who are curious, searching, discovering
and growing.
WHAT
IS KOINONIA?
Texas
Koinonia is a multi-denominational Christian community that through
prayer, fellowship, and sharing of common experiences helps individuals
feel Gods purpose for their life. In feeling Gods grace,
individuals can focus on becoming more committed Christians seeking
to bring Christ into their families, their churches, their work
and their communities. Usually, we hold two weekend retreats per
year, in the Spring and the Fall. The weekends last from Friday
evening, including dinner, until mid-afternoon on Sunday. Because
it is a co-ed environment, couples as well as single adults are
invited to attend. The only requirement is that you be a professing
Christian--in other words, you believe that Jesus Christ is the
son of God and your personal savior, and that he died on the cross
for the forgiveness of sins.
THE
WEEKEND
Koinonia
is many things, but most of all, it is an experience to be lived.
The weekend is structured around a series of talks given by laypeople
and clergy. After each talk, there is a time of discussion in small
groups. The talks provide thoughts for discussion and guidelines
for life beyond the weekend. The weekend is filled with informal
conversation. singing, worship and laughter; but most of all it
is filled with joy and the presence of the Holy Spirit.
ATTENDANCE
Koinonia
is open to adult Christians of any age, sex, race or denomination.
Participants may be sponsored by anyone who has attended a Koinonia
retreat or other similar Christian weekend, including the Catholic
Crusillo and the Walk to Emmaus.
THE
CAMP
Koinonia uses church retreat centers near the Dallas/Fort
Worth metroplex.
AFTER
THE WEEKEND
Koinonians
are encouraged (not required) to become active disciples of Christ
in their homes, their churches, and their communities. Koinonia
nurtures this process after the weekend through:
-
Sharing Groups - small groups that meet regularly to encourage
members' spiritual growth
- Ultreyas
- monthly or semi-monthly reunions open to all Koinonians with
fellowship, sharing worship, singing and food
- Texas
Star Tale Newsletter - informs the Koinonia community of future
weekends, Ultreyas, prayer concerns and special happenings
